Shugen (守玄) meditation
An Ancient Esoteric Practice Passed Down from Master to Seeker
Since ancient times, people have believed that the human body is a reflection of the vibration of the divine source that exists within. Sages and enlightened ones of the East have devoted themselves to the study of this spiritual art.
In Tendo, Shugen is practiced as a means of spiritual refinement, which is permitted only to those who have their third eye (玄関 Genkan) opened. Shugen polishes the body’s seven main chakras, harmonizes body and spirit, and leads the spirit, mind, and body toward purification.
The Seven Chakras — The Center of the Human Microcosm
Just as the body’s organs form the physical body, the chakras shape the invisible spiritual body. These two are intimately bound.
Therefore, the physical body directly reflects the harmony or disharmony of the spiritual body. If the spiritual nature is neglected, its effects appear immediately in the body. The body is the mirror of the spirit.
The Significance of Shugen
-
Shugen is a discipline in which one focuses the entirety of one’s mind on the third eye (玄関 Genkan), by which one can connect with the Source of all (the Creator).
-
It is a method of self-cultivation that preserves both physical vitality and mental strength.
-
One can directly experience the state of enlightenment sought by many saints, including the Buddha.
-
It purifies body and mind so that the eternal life attained through the Tokudo ceremony can further blossom.
-
Through the gateway of the third eye (玄関 genkan), the energy that arises is transformed into great love, manifesting the salvation of the Tao.
